How to calculate a game's cost per hour

The formula is simple: price paid ÷ hours played = cost per hour. A £60 game played for 40 hours costs £1.50 per hour. A £15 game played for 100 hours costs £0.15 per hour.

Cost per hour is only one way to look at value. A short game can still be worth buying, while a very long game is not automatically good value. This calculator simply makes the time-to-price relationship visible.

Video game cost per hour FAQ

What is the formula for cost per hour?

Divide the price you paid for the game by the number of hours you played. For example, £40 divided by 20 hours is £2 per hour.

What if the game was free?

If the price paid is zero, the monetary cost per hour is £0, $0 or €0. The calculator does not try to assign a value to your time.

Does a lower cost per hour mean a game is better?

No. Cost per hour measures price relative to playtime, not quality. Story, enjoyment, replayability and personal preference are separate questions.
